Recorderly vs Handheld Studio vs a local videographer

Handheld Studio rents camcorders one at a time: $649 for one for seven days, $1,199 for two, plus a $100 refundable deposit. Recorderly ships four 4K cameras with a wireless mic on each for $795, or two for $595. A local videographer averages $2,300. Handheld turns film around faster — about two weeks against our three to four — and includes the raw footage we charge $195 for. On cameras per dollar and on audio, we win outright.

What it costs

Four cameras for less than their two

Handheld prices per camcorder, so the cost scales linearly. We price by kit, so the fourth camera is nearly free.

Who wins what

Every one of these three beats the other two at something. Here is the honest split.

Where Handheld Studio beats us

  • Two-week turnaround against our three to four. We removed our paid rush option, so there is no way to buy the gap back.
  • Raw footage is included. We charge $195 for the drive, and three of our competitors bundle it.
  • A 14-day window, which suits a wedding weekend that runs into a send-off brunch. Ours is tighter.
  • They sell a single camera. Our smallest kit is two, so if one is genuinely all you want, they have the option and we do not.

Where Recorderly beats Handheld Studio

  • Four cameras for $795 against two for $1,199. That is $199 per camera against $599.50.
  • A free wireless clip-on mic on every camera. Their camcorders record speeches on the onboard mic from wherever the guest is standing.
  • No equipment deposit. Their $100 hold comes back, but it leaves your account at booking. Our only deposit is optional — $149 to hold a date, and it comes off your total.
  • A 5–7 minute film on the four-camera kit against a 2–3 minute recap.
  • An editing-only tier at $395 if you already have footage. They have no equivalent.

Where a videographer beats both

  • Someone is guaranteed to be pointing a camera at the ceremony. Guest cameras are a probability, not a promise.
  • Low light, long lenses and fast movement. A dark church at 7pm is where consumer cameras give up and a professional body does not.
  • A contract, liability insurance and backup gear. If something fails at 4pm, that is their problem to solve, not yours.
  • Directed coverage. You can ask for specific shots, in a specific order, and get them.
The per-camera math. Four cameras from us works out to $199 each. Two from Handheld Studio works out to $599.50 each, three times as much per camera. Against the $2,300 national average for a videographer, our four-camera kit costs 35% of one operator — and you could book the kit, the footage drive and a licensed song and still come in under half.

Which one is for you

Recorderly

Most cameras, only usable speech audio

You want several angles and you want the toasts to be audible. The mics are the part nobody else in this category ships, and they are the difference between a speech you can hear and a speech you can see someone giving.

Handheld Studio

When two weeks matters more than four cameras

You need the film fast, or you want the camcorder for a full fortnight, or you only ever wanted one camera going around one room. Their turnaround is genuinely the best in this group.

When the ceremony cannot be missed

Vows, a dark venue, a processional that happens once. If any single moment has to be covered properly, hire someone whose entire job is covering it. Then hand the guests cameras for everything else.

Questions

Recorderly and Handheld Studio, answered

Is Handheld Studio cheaper than Recorderly?

Not at the same number of cameras. One camcorder from Handheld Studio is $649 for seven days; two Recorderly cameras are $595. Two camcorders from Handheld Studio are $1,199; four Recorderly cameras are $795. Handheld Studio also takes a $100 refundable deposit against the equipment; we take none. Our only deposit is optional — $149 to hold a date, and it comes off your total.

Does Handheld Studio include the raw footage?

Yes, by download, trimmed of accidental recordings and blank space. Recorderly charges $195 for the footage drive, which arrives in the mail as a 1TB drive with the edited film and every original clip sorted by camera.

Which one delivers the film faster?

Handheld Studio, at roughly two weeks from when the camcorder comes back. Recorderly is three weeks on the four-camera kit and four weeks on the two-camera kit. There is no paid rush option on either side.

How many cameras do you actually need?

Two covers a room under about 60 guests. Four is the common choice for 60 to 150 and gives an editor enough angles to cut between rather than sitting on one long take. Above 150 guests, more cameras help more than a longer edit does.

Do guest cameras replace a wedding videographer?

They replace one if you were never going to hire one, and they sit alongside one if you are. A professional covers the scheduled moments from a fixed position. Guest cameras cover the rest of the night, which is where most of the footage people rewatch comes from.

Does either option record speeches properly?

Recorderly includes a free wireless clip-on mic per camera, which is what you clip to whoever is speaking. Handheld Studio's camcorders record on their onboard mic, so speech audio depends entirely on how close the guest holding the camera is standing.
