Why guests, not a crew

Every decade of their life, in one room, for four hours

College friends, work people, neighbours, cousins, the ones who drove three hours. A fortieth or a seventieth is the only night all of them are ever in the same place, and they each know a completely different version of the same person. None of those versions gets recorded unless somebody asks for it.

Who should hold a camera: Assign one friend the job of asking every single guest for ten seconds — a story, a warning, one line. Put that camera on the tabletop tripod in a quiet corner. It becomes the spine of the film and the second camera just follows the party.

What tends to end up in the film
  • The surprise, if there is one, from three angles
  • Friends from every decade in the same room
  • The toast that turns into a roast
  • The kids running through the middle of it
  • One-line messages from everyone before they leave
Shot list, in the box

Your guests get a plan, not a lecture

Every milestone birthday kit ships with table cards that explain the camera in one sentence and name six things worth pointing it at. Put one at each place setting with the same question on it and you end up with forty answers instead of four.

Forty voices, one person, five minutes

The interviews, the toast, the roast that grows out of it. All of it comes back to us and our editors cut it into a film that plays like a whole room describing one person.

★★★★★

For my mother's 70th we asked everyone to say one sentence into a camera. Forty-one people did. The editors cut them together and I don't think I've ever seen her cry like that.

Priced by cameras, not hours. Most milestone birthdays book two — it's usually one room, and the interview corner does most of the work. Already have your own footage? We just edit that.

What you’re comparing it against. A videographer for a day like this runs $2,300 to $4,000 — that’s the US wedding average from The Knot and Zola, and the closest published benchmark there is. Four cameras, four mics, shipping both ways and the edited film is $795.

If there isn't enough footage, you don't pay for the film. If the kit comes back without enough usable material to cut a film, we refund your order minus a 20% restocking fee on the package price — the kit was held and shipped for a date we couldn't rent to anyone else. Add-ons are refunded in full. It's rare, and we show you what came back before we make that call.
Questions

Milestone Birthday specifics

It's a surprise. They can't be the one receiving a box.

Then they aren't. Put whoever is planning it as the shipping address — a friend, a sibling, an office. The box is plain on the outside with no branding, and the kit arrives five days ahead, so there's time to test the cameras somewhere other than the house.

We want everyone answering the same question.

That's what makes these films work, and it's worth deciding the question before the night. Add the prompt cards at checkout and we'll print it, or write your own on the place cards. One question asked forty times gives the editors a spine to build around instead of forty unrelated clips.

Nobody is going to volunteer to do the interviews.

Appoint one person and give them the job in advance rather than hoping. It takes about ninety seconds a guest, it works best after dinner and before the toast, and the person who does it should be someone who can interrupt a conversation without it being awkward. That one job produces most of the film.

Can we play something at the party itself?

No — and it's better to know that now. The film is cut after the cameras come back, which is three to four weeks depending on your kit. If you want something screened on the night, that's a separate thing you'd make beforehand. What you get from us is the record of the party, not a piece of it.

They hate being filmed.

Most of the film isn't footage of them. It's the room talking about them — forty people describing the same person differently — which is a different experience to watch and a much easier one to sit for. People who dread a videographer following them around tend to be fine with this.

These are the milestone birthday questions. Booking, shipping, batteries, sound, returns and delivery are all answered in the full question list. Filming something else? See all event types.
